Freelance journalist Sean Casey has been speaking on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel about which player is waiting to sign for Newcastle United.
While Newcastle appear to have one of the wealthiest owners, they are not going to spend lavishly this summer as some may expect, which could be why they’ve seemingly opted to sign Matt Targett for just £12m instead of the linked Atletico Madrid defender Renan Lodi, who had a €40m (£34.2m) price tag on his head.
PIF don’t appear to be slowing down when it comes to shopping for a bargain this summer, as Casey has claimed that free agent Christian Eriksen is waiting to sign for the Magpies after Newcastle offered him a contract following recent talks on Tyneside.
Casey has spoken about Eriksen simply waiting to sign for the Magpies – while they won’t be moving for Lucas Paqueta.
He said: “Does the player [Paqueta] want to come? Absolutely. Was there talks between the club? Yeah. Can I see it happening? They’re not going to put down financial outlay on an attacking midfielder, especially when you have somebody like Christian Eriksen that’s waiting to probably sign on the dotted line.
Should Newcastle sign Eriksen?
Yes!
No!
“Somebody gave me the information… Eriksen was on Tyneside, his agent was on Tyneside, they held talks, they negotiated about a contract, it’s on the table. I think he wants to sit back and see how our transfer window looks, to see if we’re actually going to be competitive before he makes a decision on it.
“He has a lot of options, but there’s definitely been talks.”
TIF Thoughts on Eriksen to Newcastle…
While a lot of the talk has been about Eriksen either staying at Brentford or returning to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with the Magpies able to offer a very exciting project under Eddie Howe and PIF, as well as Eriksen likely being able to start for a side pushing for the top part of the table, the Denmark international could be tempted.
The ‘big-name’ midfielder managed to come back from a serious heart problem and take to the Premier League with what appeared to be very little effort, as he helped the Bees avoid the drop and only tasted defeat twice when starting a game, so he clearly still has a lot of talent on offer and would be a statement of intent from PIF if they were to beat a side such as Spurs to the deal.
