Aaron Stokes had claimed on the Everything is Black and White podcast that reported transfer target James Ward-Prowse would be a starter for Newcastle United.

The Magpies are currently being linked with a whole host of midfielders such as Adrien Rabiot, Lucas Paqueta and Ward-Prowse, which may come as a slight surprise considering they brought in Bruno Guimaraes just a few months ago and have their Player of the Season Joelinton operating in that position.

Ward-Prowse is likely the most interesting one as he still has four years left on his contract at Southampton, and although he would arrive as a reliable Premier League midfielder and England international, given his profile and contract status, he may cost a lot.

Stokes, who acknowledged this, was of the potentially controversial opinion that Ward-Prowse would walk into Eddie Howe’s starting lineup.

Would Ward-Prowse start for Newcastle?

Yes!

No!

He said: “The likes of Ward-Prowse – I know not a lot of fans will be agreeing with this, but I think he would walk into that team over the likes of Shelvey; I think he offers more of his all-round game.”

TIF Thoughts on the Ward-Prowse links…

Despite the idea of bringing in yet another international player to help bolster their midfield department being mooted, it has been reported that Southampton would be looking to receive around £75m for their captain, which is likely more than what PIF would be willing to pay given it was previously thought their entire summer budget would be under that mark.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

It’s no surprise that Eddie Howe is a fan and would like to bring Ward-Prowse to Tyneside given that he’s already signed three homegrown English players and looks set to add a fourth in Nick Pope, so that’s clearly how he wishes to build the foundations of his squad.
