Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed on The Done Deal Show that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on Newcastle United’s transfer radar.
Prior to Callum Wilson’s return from injury at the back end of last season, it appeared very clear that Newcastle would be bringing in at least one striker this summer transfer window. However, The Athletic has now reported that Wilson’s good form in the last few games has made the situation more complicated.
Wilson is set to move his family up from the south of England to join him on Tyneside, to reduce the amount of time he spends travelling up and down the country, but this commitment has not stopped the Magpies from making a move for young striker Hugo Ekitike, but after he suffered a hamstring injury, that could now be in doubt.
Jacobs claimed earlier this week that Calvert-Lewin was still on Newcastle’s radar as an alternative to Ekitike.
He said: “I think Newcastle fans will be hugely excited if they get that one over the line [Ekitike], but if they don’t, they’re going to have to find a striker from somewhere.

Following the news that Ekitike had limped off with a hamstring injury while on international duty with the French U21s, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the player’s agent was due on Tyneside this Monday to continue discussions, although this has now been delayed due to the youngster’s fitness concerns.
This could now force Newcastle and PIF’s hand to splash out the cash on a more proven and established striker this summer if they decide to ditch Ekitike for now, and they don’t come much better than Calvert-Lewin, who boasts an impressive record of 45 goals in 119 league starts, although his £60m price tag could be a big stumbling block. Although he wasn’t able to produce as much as he would have liked in the season just gone, he was described as a ‘top striker’ by Carlo Ancelotti after his efforts in the 2020/21 season.
