Journalist Ben Jacobs has spoken on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel about Newcastle United’s interest in Lucas Paqueta.

The Magpies managed to sign a Brazilian midfielder from Lyon in the January transfer window in the form of Bruno Guimaraes, but the international ace has not disguised the fact that he’d love to be joined by former teammate and friend Paqueta on Tyneside.

Paqueta is thought to have a £58m price tag on his head according to The Chronicle, which would wipe out the majority of Newcastle’s reported summer transfer budget, although recent reports have claimed that a deal could still happen this summer, likely with staggered payments.

Jacobs has confirmed that Newcastle indeed hold an interest in the midfielder this transfer window.

He said: “There’s nothing advanced or agreed, as I understand it, anyway, with either the player – and this is speaking for Spurs and Newcastle – and both clubs or Lyon and either club.

Will Newcastle sign Paqueta this summer?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“So if that transfer is to happen, I think it’s going to drag on a little bit this window, but there is truth, from what I understand, in Newcastle’s interest, for sure.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s interest in Paqueta…

It’s no surprise that Newcastle, as well as Tottenham Hotspur, are interested in signing Paqueta, as it appears clear he’s open to a move away and managed to create the 11th-most shot-creating actions in Ligue 1 last season with 117 (FBRef).

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Considering that Paqueta has already been over to Tyneside for a look around the city with Guimaraes and been pictured wearing a Newcastle shirt, it would appear that the Magpies could have a starting advantage over any other potential suitor because of the midfielder’s very close relationship with their own Brazilian international.

The Magpies and Spurs aren’t the only ones to have recently been left impressed by Paqueta, however, with his current manager Peter Bosz labelling him as ‘extraordinary‘ after starring against Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 last season.
