Newcastle United are still very much in the race to sign Lille centre-back Sven Botman in this summer’s transfer window.

This has been claimed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking on his latest Here We Go podcast to discuss the Dutch defender’s future.

The Toon have been monitoring the 22-year-old since January, having failed to secure his services during the winter market as the Ligue 1 side held firm.

Romano now believes it is between Eddie Howe’s side and Italian champions Milan in the race for the defender’s signature this summer, with three years still remaining on Botman’s deal with Lille.

And the Italian transfer insider believes the situation surrounding Botman’s future may develop within the coming days.

He said: “Sven Botman, it’s Newcastle versus AC Milan, because AC Milan [have] wanted him [for] a long time, but Newcastle are still fighting, and so Botman will be one of the names to watch in the coming days.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

It does seem apparent Howe is looking for another centre-back this summer, with reports also linking the Magpies to the likes of Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Do you expect Botman to sign this summer?

No

However, we are pretty sure the potential signing of Botman would appeal a lot more to the Newcastle faithful, with the youngster having already played three campaigns of top-flight football (via Transfermarkt).

Tottenham Hotspur are another club believed to have an eye on Botman, so it would seem that acquiring his services would be a real coup for the Toon.
