Journalist Michael Bridge has claimed he has heard that Newcastle United are interested in Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

There were reports late last year claiming that Newcastle were interested in Paqueta and the Premier League outfit had a bid rejected for him, but they did manage to sign his former Lyon teammate Bruno Guimaraes in January.

Paqueta was in impressive form for Lyon last season, making 44 appearances in all competitions whilst chipping in with 11 goals and assisting seven times along the way.

With Newcastle showing interest since last year for Paqueta, Bridge claimed to GiveMeSport that he has indeed heard there is continued interest from the Magpies, who could be keen to reunite him with Guimaraes.

He said: “I’ve heard nothing from them about Spurs’ (interest). It’s Newcastle I’ve heard with him. Lyon is always a club to look at. You’d have to say Newcastle, after signing Bruno Guimaraes, that they would probably be keen to reunite him with him. I don’t think Spurs will be in the market for him.”

TIF Thoughts on Bridge’s comments…

Newcastle signed Guimaraes from Lyon in January, and he made a major impact as he helped the Toon rise out of the relegation zone before finishing 11th. Guimaraes ended up with the second-highest average player rating in the Magpies squad (as per SofaScore).

It was clear the difference that Guimaraes had in the Newcastle side since his introduction, and Paqueta, who was once called ‘amazing’ by Thierry Henry, might see this and notice the direction that the club is going in and be interested in a move to St James’ Park.

However, the player will be aware that Newcastle do not have any European football to contend with next season, so if another club comes in for him that are playing in European competition, he might opt for that move rather than to Newcastle.
