Journalist Jordan Cronin has dropped a damning claim on forgotten midfielder Jeff Hendrick after he revealed he may leave Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle have started their rebuild under their new owners, which has seen a number of new faces arrive at the club, including Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn, and Matt Targett.

However, with players coming into the squad, that inevitably means several players on the fringes of the first team will be sold in order to recoup some money and keep within the Financial Fair Play regulations.

One player who has been tipped with a move away from the north-east side is Hendrick. The former Burnley man arrived at the Toon back in August 2020 on a free transfer, but now it looks like he will be on the way out, according to Cronin.

And after sharing his interview with the Irishman on Twitter, Cronin summed up his own feelings with the following claim: “Just hasn’t worked out for him on Tyneside. His best game was against Burnley in the Carabao Cup.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Cronin’s comments…

Cronin is correct in his assessment that it has not worked out for the Irishman during his stint at Newcastle, as having made 139 appearances for Burnley, he went on to only make 27 for Newcastle since 2020, with only three goals and one assist to his name in this time. During 2021/22, he only made three appearances over the entire season, showing that he is firmly out of the plans for Newcastle’s future.

After the signing of Guimaraes, the improvement of Joelinton in his new position and the new rumours linking Eddie Howe’s side to Juventus outcast Adrien Rabiot, it comes as no surprise that the club are looking to rid itself of players who are not involved.

The Magpies have a hugely bright future ahead of them with their new owners and the seemingly unlimited resources they now have, so Hendrick will just be one of a long list of assets sold by the club in the coming years.

That said, it could be argued that irrespective of the club’s takeover, Hendrick may well have been shown the door anyway if his peak performance came in a low-key cup tie, as Cronin suggests.
