Newcastle United could now turn their attention to Robert Sanchez to end their search for a new goalkeeper this summer.

This has been suggested by insider Dean Jones, as he discussed the Brighton & Hove Albion man’s future in his weekly transfer column for GiveMeSport.

It was believed the Toon would pursue Manchester United shot-stopper Dean Henderson, however, recent reports have suggested Newcastle are no longer interested.

Dan Ashworth will have overseen Sanchez’s development with the Seagulls during his time on the south coast, with the 24-year-old making his Premier League debut back in 2020.

With Eddie Howe’s men now looking elsewhere, Jones believes Sanchez could be a realistic option for the Toon:

“Newcastle United could turn to 6 ft 6 Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as they weigh up new options for next season,” wrote Jones.

“Fresh eyes are now looking over solutions between the sticks and new-on-the-list Sanchez is highly regarded, along with Burnley’s Nick Pope.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

This feels like a really interesting possibility, with Sanchez holding an obvious connection with the new man on Tyneside in Ashworth from their days together on the south coast.

So in that sense, it would feel like a move which would make a lot of sense, and if it was to happen, it would be apparent that Ashworth rates the Spaniard highly.

Having made the move up to the Premier League, Sanchez’s role in between the sticks at Brighton has only increased, and we think he could provide the Toon with an immediate improvement in goal.
