Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United will be among the contenders when it comes to being interested in Nathan Ake.

There have been reports suggesting Newcastle are keen to lure Ake away from Premier League champions Manchester City over the summer, but that he will also cost the Magpies £50m if they want to acquire his services ahead of next season.

After featuring just 14 times in the Premier League last term, City have supposedly told Ake that he can leave the club in the summer, but the price that they are willing to accept could be an issue in the potential move.

With Eddie Howe previously working with the Dutch defender at Bournemouth, Jones claimed to GiveMeSport that the Magpies will be in the conversation when it comes to where he will end up at the start of next season.

He said: “Eddie Howe loves him, he’s had him on his mind for quite a while now.

“He recommended him as a signing for the summer and he’s potentially going to be available, so of all the people being mentioned, look out in the background, if anything starts to happen with Nathan Ake, Newcastle will probably be in the conversation.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Newcastle had a strong end to last season in the Premier League which meant they ended up finishing 11th in the table, but Howe will be keen to upgrade his squad even further over the summer in the hope that they can progress even higher up the standings next term.

Howe brought in Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion in January and he ended up with the third-highest average player rating in the Magpies squad (as per SofaScore). Ake could act as a suitable partner for him, and with him being out of favour at City, he might be keen to force a move.

With Howe’s connection with the player and the direction that the club are heading in, this is a transfer that could be suitable for all parties, so it seems the deciding factor could be whether Newcastle are willing to fork out a sizeable sum for him.
