Graeme Bailey admits to liking Newcastle United-linked goalkeeper Bernd Leno while speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast.

The Magpies have been tipped for a while to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, with a deal to bring Dean Henderson to St James’ Park said to have been close, according to the Manchester Evening News, though he is now in talks to join Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle have been linked with other shot-stoppers, such as 33-year-old Yann Sommer, Alphonse Areola and January target Leno, with the latter being able to arrive with the most Premier League experience of the three under his belt, so is therefore arguably most able to challenge Martin Dubravka immediately.

Discussing Newcastle’s goalkeeper search, Bailey admitted to being a big fan of Leno amidst links to the Toon this summer.

He said: “The player they tried to sign in January was Bernd Leno from Arsenal. I always thought he was the better option [than Henderson] anyway, I must admit.

Would Leno be an upgrade on Dubravka?

“I like Dean Henderson, but I think Bernd Leno’s a better keeper, I think he would be a major upgrade for Newcastle. We know that Arsenal are allowing him to move on.”

TIF Thoughts on Leno to Newcastle…

It was reported back in May that Arsenal were willing to sell Leno this summer and would only be looking for a fee of around £8.5m, which would fit into the Magpies’ transfer budget as well as helping them to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, while also improving their squad.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

However, at 30, Leno would likely not be the long-term answer to the Magpies’ goalkeeping department, whereas someone such as Henderson would arrive younger with more years ahead of them in their career, however, in just over 12 months, Leno will be 31 and could see the Magpies move for a new shot-stopper once again next summer.
