Newcastle United: Journalist makes positive claim on potential signing

|

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Newcastle United have had Dominic Calvert-Lewin on their radar for the last couple of transfer windows.

There have been reports stating that Newcastle United are keen on luring Dominic Calvert-Lewin away from Goodison Park in this summer transfer window, but Everton have labelled their striker at £60 million which has put a halt on proceedings.

Calvert-Lewin struggled last season due to injury problems, so he only managed to feature 17 times in the Premier League, whilst chipping in with five goals, one of which was an important winner against Crystal Palace on the second last game of the season to secure top-flight safety.

With Newcastle reportedly showing interest in Calvert-Lewin, O’Rourke has claimed to GiveMeSport that he wouldn’t rule out a transfer to Goodison Park this summer.

“I wouldn’t rule it out. He has been someone who’s been on their wish list now for the last couple of transfer windows.

“They were interested in January and they’re still interested in this summer transfer window as well. Calvert-Lewin endured a disappointing season last season due to injuries. He missed quite a few games, but I think on his day, he’s one of the best strikers in the Premier League,” O’Rourke said.

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

Newcastle had an impressive second half of last season which meant they finished 11th in the Premier League, but they still had issues in the attacking sense. Callum Wilson was their top scorer with eight goals and featured just three times after Christmas due to injury, so Eddie Howe will most likely be looking to bring in a new striker.

Calvert-Lewin, who was called a ‘wildcard’ by Ben Jacobs, had a frustrating season last term for the Toffees, but the season prior, he netted 16 times in 33 Premier League games, so if he did join Newcastle and return to that goal-scoring form then it would certainly be a great signing from Howe.
