Fabrizio Romano believes that Manchester United’s interest in Pau Torres may have cooled due to their budget.

Speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel the transfer guru was discussing the Red Devils’ transfer plans and weighed in on the decreasing word surrounding a possible move for Villarreal’s centre-back Torres.

The 25-year-old has been ‘discussed’ as a potential target this summer but as Erik ten Hag prioritises a reunion with his former midfield maestro a move has seemingly been put in the backburner.

The English giants have also been linked with Ajax duo Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez with ten Hag’s former employers seeking €50m (4:26) for each but Romano is of the impression that the Old Trafford executives are focused on improving elsewhere before they strengthen in defence.

Would Pau Torres be the best CB at United?

(13:30)”For Man United he’s always been a player on the list but maybe was not the only priority.

“They are waiting for other solutions on the market and I think it’s also because of the budget. There are many things to do and this is why Pau Torres you know spending €45m on a centre-back may be they want to wait and find another solution or maybe to wait and see if Villarreal will accept a different fee in the coming weeks.”

TIF Thoughts on Torres and Manchester United…

Having been described as “amazing” by his current manager Unai Emery, the £45m-rated Torres would be a shoo-in at the heart of the defence in Manchester after another fine season at the Ceramica.

His style of play is likened to that of Marc Guehi, Joel Matip and Leonardo Bonucci due to his robust approach but among his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues and European competitions over the past year he ranks in the top 1% for dribbles completed and the top 10% for progressive passes and progressive carries per game (FBRef).

If there is anything left in that kitty United could be as well to target the Spaniard who has been heralded as ‘sensational’ by his national team boss Luis Enrique as he could well toughen up a backline that shipped 57 league goals last term.
