Sky Sports presenter Joe Thomlinson has been speaking on the Football Daily YouTube channel about how he’d be surprised to see Manchester United splash a lot of money on Darwin Nunez.
It has recently been reported in the media that Benfica are looking to receive offers of around £67m for Uruguayan international Nunez – some £25m more than what they rejected from West Ham back in the January transfer window.
Man United are said to be one of the big clubs to hold an interest in Nunez – who has previously been described as a ‘monster’ – despite not being able to offer Champions League football, although the £67m price tag may well put them off given how untested he is at the top level and the fact they will want to improve other areas of the squad this summer.
Thomlinson has admitted he would be surprised to see Man United throw so much money at a striker that’s untested in the Premier League.
Should Man United sign Darwin Nunez?
Yes!
No!
He said: “So Darwin Nunez is clearly one of the better options on the market – I tend to agree with you guys, though. For that fee, I think Manchester United have got a lot of work to do this summer, and [to spend] maybe two-thirds or half of their budget on Darwin Nunez, I think would be a bit of a surprise to me, it really would be a bit of a surprise.”
TIF Thoughts on Man United’s interest in Nunez…
With reports in April suggesting that Erik ten Hag’s budget this summer may be around £100-150m, it really would be a shock to see them splash out almost all of it on one player who has never played at a higher level than the Portuguese league.
However, at just 22, the Red Devils may feel like they have to move for the striker or miss out on what could be a real gem of a talent in years to come, as he managed to put up 38 goal involvements this season, including two against Man United’s rivals Liverpool in the Champions League.
