Man United have held an interest in De Jong for several weeks now, although that interest has seemingly been resisted by the player, who has spoken about his desire to remain at Barcelona beyond this summer’s transfer window.
However, as the window drags on and Barcelona become more desperate to raise funds, he may realise that his future could well be with United and playing under his former manager, Erik ten Hag – something Jones highlighted on The Done Deal Show.
Jones has claimed that Ten Hag certainly wants De Jong and that he may be convincing the midfielder that this is the move for him.
Will Man United manage to sign De Jong?
Jones said: “As I said on here last week, Ten Hag 100% wants Frenkie and has got into his head. And Frenkie is willing, like, if he’s going to leave, then Man United is a good club for him to join.”
TIF Thoughts on Man United’s pursuit of De Jong…
The Dutch international, who was called a ‘genius’ by Xavi earlier this year, is clearly adamant that his preference this summer is to stay at Barcelona, however, with that not likely to be able to happen given the Catalan club’s financial problems, working under a manager he knows very well could be the next best thing.
While playing in the Europa League would be far from ideal for someone such as De Jong, it won’t be alien to him given that’s where Barcelona crashed out of Europe last season at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt, so that may not be as big of a stumbling block as people might think.
