Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United have the intention to act soon in terms of signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

There have been recent reports that Manchester United are attempting to bring De Jong to the Premier League from La Liga, with Dutch manager Erik ten Hag hoping that he can use the connection they formed together at Ajax to lure him to Old Trafford.

De Jong signed for Barcelona in 2019 from the Eredivisie giants for a fee in the region of £77m and has been a mainstay in the side since, featuring 140 times in all competitions, while his current contract is not set to expire until 2026.

With the links of a transfer to Manchester United for De Jong, Romano has confirmed on his YouTube channel that the English club want to try and get a deal over the line this summer.

He said: “For sure, Manchester United have the intention to act soon for Frenkie de Jong. They really want to try and complete this transfer this summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

In terms of stats this season, De Jong has had a mixed bag for Barcelona in La Liga. He ranked seventh in terms of average player rating (7.08), seventh in terms of accurate passes per game (46.8) and ranked sixth in key passes per game (1.3), as per SofaScore.

United struggled this season as they finished sixth in the Premier League, 13 points off a Champions League spot, so Ten Hag may be keen to bring in some proven talent in the summer to ensure they have a better campaign next term.

Ten Hag knows De Jong from their time together at Ajax, so this may help convince the 25-year-old midfielder to join him on his journey at Manchester United if Barcelona are willing to let him go.
