TalkSport journalist Alex Crook has tipped Manchester United to sign Roma and England striker Tammy Abraham this summer in a surprise move as they look to miss out on Darwin Nunez

The Red Devils are in serious need of a rebuild this summer under new boss Erik ten Hag, they have several players leaving on free transfers like Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, and Nemanja Matic. They are also rumoured to be looking to offload the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, eric Billy, Phil Jones, Alex Telles, and Anthony Martial this summer as well.

One of their biggest problems last season was scoring goals, outside of club legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who bagged 24 goals, only Bruno Fernandes hit double digits last season while their third-highest scorer was Mason Greenwood, who no longer plays for the club for legal reasons.

As a result of this, they have been linked with several forwards already in this transfer window. However, they have seemingly missed out on top target Nunez as he looks set to sign for Liverpool, which has resulted in links to surprise move for Abraham, who impressed in the Serie A with Roma last season.

Crook revealed this link on the TalkSport GameDay podcast, stating: “I’ve just got a suspicion they might try and get Tammy Abraham out of Roma. He was someone that I think they looked at in January. As I’ve mentioned, we interviewed Tammy on Darren Bent’s Boot Room and he seemed very settled in Italy, but Roma aren’t in the Champions League and nor are Manchester United…

“I think eventually he will want to come back to the Premier League. The question again is: are Manchester United an attractive enough proposition for him?”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

The link with Abraham, who was called ‘unreal’ by journalist Nizaar Kinsella, does feel like a surprise as he has only completed one season in Italy and could go for as high as £67 million, which is the buy-back clause in his contract for United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea.

However, he would offer the Manchester outfit a better goalscoring option alongside Ronaldo, as the Englishman bagged 21 goals and four assists in all competitions for the Rome outfit while averaging 2.4 shots, one key pass, one dribble, and two aerial duels won per game. He also ranks in the 92nd percentile for non-penalty expected goals and has shown his defensive capabilities by ranking in the 76th percentile for both tackles and clearances at his position (FBRef).

Tempting Abraham out of Rome could cost United a large sum and considering he has been called up to the England side while playing in Italy and the World Cup is on the horizon, he may chose to remain in Italy until the end of next season.

Will United sign Abraham?
