Fabrizio Romano has dropped a positive transfer claim on Manchester United’s pursuit of Darwin Nunez while speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel.

It has been reported quite extensively that Man United hold an interest in the young attacker, who lit up the Portuguese top flight and the Champions League, with 34 goals across all competitions this term, including two against Liverpool in the latter.

With Edinson Cavani set to leave Man United as a free agent and the future of Marcus Rashford up in the air, Nunez could well be seen as a young attacker capable of playing in several positions that would help Erik ten Hag get the Red Devils into the top four next season.

Romano has now revealed that contact between Man United and Nunez’s representatives has taken place.

He said: “For sure, the situation seems pretty clear with Darwin, they are exploring this possibility. I’m 100% sure that his name has been mentioned internally at Manchester United, so I would keep his name on the list for Man United, he’s a player that they really like, he’s a serious possibility.

Would you like Man United to sign Nunez?

No!

“It depends on the price also, because a few weeks ago, it was around £70-75m. Now from Benfica, they want a bit more; they’re joking on this, it’s normal – I say in a positive way; when you have a top player and a lot of competition between top clubs, it’s normal to do these kinds of transfer strategies, but at the same point, Manchester United have a serious interest with him.

“They already had some direct contacts with people close to Darwin Nunez, and so let’s keep his name on the list.”

TIF Thoughts on Nunez to Man United…

1 of 10

Manchester United fans, do you remember how many points you picked up in seasons gone by? Let's find out, starting with 2020/21

Given Nunez’s age, clear talent in front of goal and the fact he is destined to leave this summer, it appears that there is a deal there for Man United to get done if they want him badly enough, even if they can’t offer Champions League football next term – something previously reported as crucial for the striker.

With Cristiano Ronaldo set to turn 38 by the end of next season, it would be madness for the Red Devils to continue relying on him so heavily in all competitions, so bringing in someone much younger in Nunez, who has experience in top competitions such as the Champions League, would appear to be a no-brainer. This is something that journalist Dean Jones agrees with, as he called him the ‘perfect’ striker for Manchester United.
