The Athletic journalist Oliver Kay has revealed that he believes Mohamed Salah could use the interest from other Premier League teams in his contract negotiations with Liverpool throughout next season.

Salah has been not only one of Liverpool’s best players of the last few years, but one of the best players in world football. He has been a part of a Liverpool side who have won a Champions League, Premier League title, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and a Club World Cup in recent seasons.

As a result of this, the Egyptian has garnered a lot of interest from clubs all over the world, and with only one more year left on his contract at the Reds, he could be on his way out if he does not come to an extension agreement with Liverpool.

However, Kay believes that Salah could end up using the interest he has received from clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City – with the latter being believed to be the ammunition Salah could use in his contract negotiations.

He said on The Red Agenda podcast: “I would be surprised if Salah ends up at, say, Manchester City, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it ends up as a serious option for him. Because if he can’t get the contract he wants from Liverpool, then there are maybe three clubs in the world that might offer him that contract, and one of them might be down the M62.

“I do feel that maybe it’s the kind of thing that might come out of the Salah camp as maybe a negotiating tactic, crank up the pressure on Liverpool, particularly when they’re feeling the heat over the Mane situation.”

TIF Thoughts on Kay’s comments…

While Salah has become a beloved figure among Liverpool fans, there is every possibility he ends up using the interest from their rivals in order to get the money he wants – and it’s hard to say he doesn’t deserve every penny.

This season, he racked up an impressive 31 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, winning the Premier League Golden Boot and taking Liverpool to the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals. Over his career at Liverpool, he has 156 goals and 63 assists in 254 games and currently sits ninth on the all-time scorers list – only two off Michael Owen and 16 behind club legend Kenny Dalglish.

If they do not manage to re-sign Salah, he will undoubtedly be hard to replace, but losing him to a direct title rival in Manchester City could prove to be disastrous for Liverpool and their hopes of bringing home another Premier League title.
