Liverpool: Sky Sports man not convinced by Darwin Nunez

Sky Sports presenter Joe Thomlinson has claimed on the Football Daily YouTube channel that he’s not convinced by soon-to-be new Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez.

A few weeks ago, it appeared that Nunez would be heading elsewhere, however, Liverpool seem to have acted quickest and managed to thrash out a deal with Benfica and the attacker, with a medical set to take place this week.

When Nunez officially signs for Liverpool, he will become the club’s most expensive signing despite being just 22 years old and having only hit double figures once in a top-flight league during his relatively short career, which could prove to be a risky piece of business.

Thomlinson admits he isn’t convinced by Nunez.

He said: “They were obviously very interested in [Aurelien] Tchouameni, weren’t they, and it almost feels like the Tchouameni money that they weren’t able to spend on him has gone on Darwin Nunez now, which is bizarre, because then you’re not signing the midfielder you were originally looking to pick up and you’re signing a forward.

Will Nunez be a success at Liverpool?

“I’m also really mixed on this, I said last week I was unconvinced about Liverpool needing a physical No 9.”

TIF Thoughts on Liverpool signing Nunez…

It’s true that Nunez is very much unlike any other forwards that Liverpool currently have as he stands at just under 6ft 2in and operates predominantly through the middle, so he doesn’t appear to be as flexible tactically as someone such as Diogo Jota, who’s played in a few different positions.

Which flop signed with Luis Suarez?

Liverpool splashing out a lot of money on Nunez may not look too bad if and when they sell Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich as they reportedly want £35m for the winger, so replacing a 30-year-old attacker with a 22-year-old who scored against the Reds twice last season could prove to be a smart piece of business.
