Leeds should not be looking into signing free agent Gareth Bale this summer.

That’s the view of journalist Conor McGilligan, who has been speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel following comments made by Harry Redknapp on TalkSport.

The former Premier League manager said he “would take a gamble with him” if he was at Everton or Leeds.

“I still think he can do it at the top level for another year,” said Redknapp (as relayed by Leeds United News).

The five-time Champions League winner will be on the lookout for a new club in order to maintain his fitness levels ahead of the 2022 World Cup as Wales secured qualification for the tournament in Qatar.

Bale’s contract, which sees him earn over £500,000 a week, expires at the end of the month, with the winger confirming his departure after nine years at Real Madrid – but McGilligan doesn’t want to see him at Elland Road.

He said: “Shut up Harry, we don’t want to sign Gareth Bale. Why don’t we want to sign Gareth Bale? Because he’s what, 33, 34?

“This is not something that Leeds need to touch. Brenden Aaronson, 21; Rasmus Kristensen – what, 23 [24]; potentially Taty Castellanos, 23. This is the way we’re going at the minute. The only experience I want to see in this Leeds United side when it comes to additions this summer… it is a goalkeeper. That’s it.”

TIF Thoughts on Bale to Leeds…

Bale will indeed turn 33 in July and does seem to go against the grain of what Leeds are currently looking for, and considering the Whites’ highest-earner Rodrigo takes home £100k per week, it pales in comparison to what the Welshman will want – although you would think he’d take a significant pay cut.

Nonetheless, it would be wise for Jesse Marsch to plan for the future rather than focusing on a short-term fix, and with Jack Harrison and Raphinha already in the wide positions, they don’t necessarily need another option there.

With the Brazilian hinting he could well continue in Yorkshire, as ludicrous as it may sound, there is no apparent need for Leeds to focus their attentions on bringing in Bale, as McGilligan has urged against.

Bale fits more readily into the Man Utd transfer strategy, ie buy older, already rich has beens and turn them into older, richer has beens. Not for Leeds thanks.
