Leeds United: Dean Jones claims club leading the way to land MLS striker

Leeds United are in pole position to sign New York City striker Valentin ‘Taty’ Castellanos, according to journalist Dean Jones.

American manager Jesse Marsch is expected to pluck the 23-year-old frontman from MLS, with 90min claiming that Leeds are the team ‘most’ interested in signing the Argentinian.

‘Taty’, as he is known, has already struck seven goals in 11 MLS games this season, and it is thought Manchester City turned down the chance to sign Castellanos from their sister club with the arrival of Erling Haaland. 

Still, they are said to have recommended the six-time U23 international to other Premier League clubs, with Jones stating that Leeds are leading the way.

He told GiveMeSport: “He’s highly thought of and has been scouted by a lot of clubs. 

“Man City are not going for him at this stage, but I think they would have had first option on him, so they’re opening up to other Premier League clubs, and right now, Leeds are the frontrunners.”

Interestingly, the attacker has been described as having a ‘remarkable’ story up until now, with a move away expected.

The Whites scored 20 goals fewer last season than they managed during their first campaign back in the top-flight (62). 

That was largely down to the continued absence of Patrick Bamford, who scored 17 goals as Leeds finished ninth during the 2020/21 season, before being restricted to just nine appearances last term with the Yorkshire outfit just about staving off relegation, so it is clear they will need cover.

Castellanos was the top scorer in MLS last year, netting 22 times in 35 games and averaging 1.79 shots on target per game.

He has continued his fine form this term, taking his tally to 53 goals and 23 assists in a sky blue shirt, with manager Ronny Deila describing him as ‘top-class’ – and he could really be a worthwhile addition at Elland Road if he can replicate those numbers should a deal materialise.
