Journalist Conor McGilligan believes Leeds United are trying to sign Marc Roca this summer, despite suggestions the deal might not happen.

According to a recent report in Spanish outlet Marca, the Bayern Munich man could be on his way to Yorkshire in the near future at the request of Jesse Marsch.

However, respected journalist Phil Hay recently wrote on Twitter that the deal was awaiting ‘white smoke’ – suggesting it may have a fair way to get yet before getting across the line.

In response to this, while talking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan said that he ‘thoroughly’ believes the deal for the Bayern Munich man shouldn’t be written off by any means.

He said: “I thoroughly believe Marc Roca is going on in the background. There’s way too many rumours, Marca have reported it – 7 million followers, a massive international, huge Spanish and global source, really, when it comes to papers.

“Bild in Germany reported it as well, so don’t just discount it. And that’s no disrespect to Phil [Hay], of course, but I think, you know, other massive European sources, if they’re reporting it, they will have ground soldiers, journalists who are fantastic, who are getting the inside scoops as well that Phil might not get. So yeah, keep an eye on that one.”

TIF thoughts on Marc Roca and Leeds…

As McGilligan mentions, Bild has reported the news as well – though that does seem to come from an initial Daily Mirror story. Even so, there is plenty of talk about this deal, which suggests it certainly is something being considered in the background at Leeds.

At 25 years of age and with a number of trophies under his belt – won with Spain at U21 level, as well as with Bayern Munich – it’s easy to see why the Whites might be interested in signing Roca.

However, he has had a pretty limited impact with the German giants of late, starting just four times in the league last term (via Transfermarkt). With that in mind, Roca may well be seeking an exit this summer.

Considering the strong links to Leeds, it looks as though McGilligan could be right in his claim. Still, there seems like there is a little way to go just yet before this deal is completed, so Hay certainly seems wise to urge caution before getting too excited.
