Journalist Conor McGilligan has tipped Leeds United to sign Liam Delap this summer in exchange for Kalvin Phillips.

As things stand, it looks as though the Whites are on the hunt for a new striker in the market, with Red Bull Salzburg forward Junior Adamu one name to be recently linked with a move to the Premier League club.

Sadly for their fans, though, it also looks as though star midfielder Phillips could be on his way to Manchester City. Indeed, Football Insider claims that Pep Guardiola’s side have actually made a formal bid for the player.

While talking about the current state of play on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan wondered if the need for a new striker, combined with the interest in Phillips, could lead to an exchange being made. He then named Delap as someone he has a ‘feeling’ Leeds could end up getting in a swap deal with Man City this summer.

McGilligan explained: “An interesting development as well, according to a lot of sources, Leeds are in dire need for a striker.

“This is my two cents – I don’t know if this is actually going to happen. But I’ve got a feeling; Liam Delap, I think, is becoming surplus to requirements in Manchester City’s under-23 setup. It looks like the big breakout is going to be Cole Palmer in midfield, who I spoke about earlier on.

“Now, according to reports, there could be an exchange option there for Leeds United and Manchester City. It would not surprise me if Man City, knowing Leeds United need a striker, would put Liam Delap on the table as well as an offer for Kalvin Phillips. That would sort a lot of our problems.”

TIF Thoughts on Liam Delap and Leeds United…

Still only 19 years of age, Delap has already made six senior appearances for Man City, scoring one during that time. Taking that into account, he clearly has a lot of potential.

Whether or not City would be willing to let him go remains to be seen. However, a recent report in The Times claims that the club will ‘push’ to sign Phillips from Leeds and want a deal sorted before they head off to the United States on their pre-season tour in the middle of July.

With that in mind, they may be prepared to make a sacrifice in order to get the transfer agreed as soon as possible. And so, with Leeds needing a striker, a move including Delap arriving in Yorkshire could make a fair amount of sense for all parties.
