Journalist Conor McGilligan has urged Leeds United to sign former player Charlie Taylor in this summer’s transfer market.
After Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League, it would not be a shock to see a number of their players seeking exits in the coming months. Indeed, striker Wout Weghorst looks set to leave the club already despite only joining in January.
Another player who could be added to that list is the Clarets left-back. Taylor used to play for Leeds and McGilligan has tipped the defender to make a return to the club.
While talking on the One Leeds Fan Channel after being asked about a potential replacement for Junior Firpo, he said: “Charlie Taylor. Once again, not fancied, fans won’t like it, they’ll think I’m being a revisionist, they’ll think that I want an ex-Leeds player.
“Charlie is just a very, very good left-back. Bombs up and down, his heat map’s crazy when it comes to the final third. Defensively very good, wins free kicks, ball retention’s excellent.
“I grew up with him, he’s a massive Leeds fan – it’s perfect. He’s going to be at a reduced value now, he’s what – 27, 28? Perfect, absolutely perfect; experienced Premier League player.”

It is interesting to hear McGilligan suggest that fans won’t like the idea of signing an ex-player, which sounds especially odd if Taylor really is a ‘massive’ fan of the club.
However, he may well be referencing the way Taylor tried to force a move away from Leeds in the past. Indeed, back in 2017, the defender refused to play a game against Wigan Athletic with his contract running out.
At the time, manager Garry Monk said: “There’s no sugar-coating this – Charlie refused to play the game. I think he’s been terribly advised… I think he’s been poorly advised all season.”
That incident may well live long in the memories of many Whites’ supporters, but it seems as though McGilligan is prepared to forgive and forget as he is more than happy to tip the 28-year-old to make a move back up to the Premier League over the summer.
