Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Leeds United are going to see if they can progress on the potential signing of Sander Berge.

There have been previous reports stating that Berge has caught the eye of Leeds United as a potential replacement for Kalvin Phillips, who is reportedly being lined up by Manchester City ahead of a £50m swoop.

Berge was relegated with Sheffield United to the Championship after the 2020/21 Premier League season, and following this, there was a release clause put in his contract for £35m. The Blades narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight last season after they lost in the play-off semi-finals.

With Sheffield United failing to gain top-flight status ahead of next season, Jones has claimed to GiveMeSport that it will be interesting to see if the Blades ‘cave in’ and accept a deal for Berge.

Speaking of Leeds’ interest in the Norwegian, he said: “Let’s see if they can make any headway on it.

“I think, over the next week or so, it will be interesting to see if Sheffield United start to cave in, if you like.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

If Sheffield United had gained promotion to the Premier League, then it may have been more difficult to prise Berge away from Bramall Lane, but following their failure in the play-offs, this has given Leeds a boost as they seem to be one of the only clubs that have shown an interest in his services.

It looks like Phillips will be leaving Elland Road for a move to Manchester City over the next few months, so Jesse Marsch will need to act fast and search for a replacement, and with the Norway international already having Premier League experience, he could be a good option for the American coach.

But whether Berge would consider joining Leeds considering their struggles last season remains to be seen, as you would think he would prefer to avoid another relegation battle now he is back to full fitness.
