Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Leeds United have to make ambitious signings if they want to keep hold of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips.

Both players have been linked with moves away from Leeds United, with Premier League rivals Manchester City keen on signing Phillips, while Raphinha has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in La Liga.

Leeds have already made two signings this transfer window, with Brenden Aaronson coming in the door at Elland Road alongside Rasmus Kristensen, who both arrived from RB Salzburg, a previous club of Jesse Marsch.

Meanwhile, the club were linked with the likes of Austria international Florian Grillitsch ahead of this summer’s window.

Despite already making two signings this summer, Jones has claimed to GiveMeSport that they need to show more ambition if they want to keep their key players at the club.

He said: “One thing I’m told on Leeds is that they need to show ambition in the transfer market if they are to hold on to Kalvin Phillips or Raphinha – and at the moment, the level of signings aren’t quite at the level where those two are convinced to stay.

“Even with Florian Grillitsch, who would be a nice addition, it seems he’s veering towards Fiorentina. That’s not great news for Leeds.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Leeds could well be left in a sticky situation this summer. While it would clearly be a gamble to let two of their best players go for presumably large fees, it is clear that their squad could do with a refresh given that it was riddled with injury issues last term as the Whites nearly went down.

So if Jones is right in saying the additions of Aaronson and Kristensen are not ambitious enough, perhaps Leeds can expect a season not too dissimilar to the one that has just passed – which will, in theory, edge Phillips and Raphinha closer to the exit door.

Marsch might be keen to keep two of his better players at the club, but if potential suitors come in with significant offers for them and they want to leave, it might be wise for the American to cash in and invest in players that he knows and understands who will suit his system.
