Journalist Tom Dutton has slammed Leeds United winger Daniel James for his ‘awful’ performance for Wales over the weekend.

Rob Page’s men overcame Ukraine in a narrow 1-0 win at Cardiff City Stadium to qualify for their first World Cup since 1958.

In the end, an own goal from captain Andriy Yarmolenko, who deflected Gareth Bale’s free-kick, was enough to settle the affair.

Despite the monumental victory, not all the Wales players were free of criticism, with the Leeds man called out for his efforts as Dutton questioned how he earned his high-profile move to Manchester United in 2019.

Taking to Twitter, Dutton wrote: “Dan James is a pace merchant with poor final ball and awful decision-making. Not sure how he ever got a move to United.”

In August, Leeds signed James on a permanent deal from Manchester United for a figure reported to be £25m. In his debut season, he struggled somewhat, scoring just once before Christmas.

In the Sky Sports player ratings after the Ukraine game, the winger was actually rated well (7/10) but was criticised for his inability to test goalkeeper Georgiy Bushchan from set-pieces, as well as picking up a silly yellow card.

Meanwhile, on SofaScore, it was noted that he gave the ball away 10 times and only found a teammate with one of his five crosses. With all that in mind, you can see why Dutton was critical of the Leeds man, but James will no doubt be delighted to have a played a part in Wales’ World Cup qualification.
