Speaking on the Just Joe Football Show, TeamTalk editor James Marshment gave a worrying verdict on Kalvin Phillips’ Leeds United future.

Phillips endured a campaign to forget last season, making just 20 appearances in all competitions. This, of course, had a huge impact on how Leeds’ season turned out. The Yorkshire club took until the final day to secure their safety.

The fact is, without Phillips, Leeds look like a side in trouble, which makes Marshment’s verdict all the more worrying. He said:

“But it does look a bit ominous. You’d probably have to say if he was staying, the deal would have been announced within days of Leeds’ survival, you would have, thought that’s not been done.”

“I do have a feeling we might have seen the last of him [Phillips] in a Leeds shirt. He did all that thing on the last day of the season on Instagram with his girlfriend, and it almost felt like a bit of a farewell.”

The comment comes after Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic revealed that Leeds are preparing for Phillips’ exit with Manchester United having looked at the Whites’ midfielder.

As of right now, Manchester City seems the most likely destination for the defensive midfielder. According to James Ducker of The Telegraph, City are set to formalise their internet in the Leeds star and have identified him as the ideal Fernandinho replacement.

TIF Thoughts on Kalvin Phillips…

At 26, it could be now or never for Phillips and a move to a club like Manchester City. The midfielder has more than earned the right to move on, after a number of impressive years at Leeds United.

With Rodri to contend with, Phillips is, admittedly, would face an uphill challenge to earn a spot in the starting XI each week. He may go on to play an important role when Pep Guardiola opts for rotation if he does make the move, however, it does feel like a potential move which would be hard to turn down.
