Aston Villa are still firmly in the hunt to land Luis Suarez this summer, it has been claimed.

Following reports in January that Villa were keen on a move, The Athletic has claimed that the West Midlanders are still monitoring the situation surrounding the 35-year-old, who will see his £263k-per-week deal at Atletico Madrid expire at the end of the month.

It is said that Suarez is still in ‘regular’ contact with former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard and is assessing his options before deciding what could be the final move of his career, hence the delay.

Noted insider ExWHUemployee was speaking on The Transfer Show about the possibility of a deal, and confirmed that the club “are waiting” on Suarez’s “decision”.

The veteran sharp-shooter scored 82 goals and provided 46 assists in 133 games for Liverpool, where he played alongside the Villa boss and Philippe Coutinho, who has already reunited with his ex-Reds captain at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, due to the “pull” of the manager, journalist Pete O’Rourke has previously suggested that there is a “realistic” chance that the former Barcelona goal-getter could follow.

According to Marca (via Daily Mail), Serie A outfit Atalanta have joined the race to sign the striker, alongside Inter Miami and River Plate, with Ex sharing this update.

He said: “Luis Suarez had offers from abroad like River Plate and different teams, but also Aston Villa. Obviously the link with Gerrard there and Coutinho and so on.

“So, Aston Villa are waiting to find out what Luis Suarez’s decision’s going to be. I mean, he’s 35; I think he can still do a job in the Premier League.”

Not even the most optimistic of claret and blue supporters would have expected to see not only Coutinho but also Suarez balling out in the West Midlands, but it is a real possibility due to Gerrard, and the 132-cap international has shown that he has still got it.

Despite entering the twilight of his career, Suarez has scored 34 goals in the Spanish capital across the past two seasons, including 11 in 35 La Liga matches last term.

That was despite being restricted to 20 starts as he was used more as an impact sub from the bench by Diego Simeone.

The manager hailed the Uruguayan hitman as “extraordinary” for scoring a brace in a 2-2 comeback draw against Real Sociedad last season and perhaps Ex is right to suggest Suarez could “still do a job” should he choose a reunion with some old friends.
