Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that the future of Tyrone Mings at Aston Villa could come into question if Steven Gerrard signs more defenders.

Mings has been a mainstay at the back for Villa this season after featuring 36 times in the Premier League whilst captaining the side. However, despite enduring a full campaign for his side, he has recently been left out of the England squad for the Nations League games.

Villa recently announced the signing of highly rated defender Diego Carlos from Sevilla, so this could be an indication that one of the current central defenders could see their place in the side taken.

With the recent introduction of Carlos at Villa Park, O’Rourke claimed to GiveMeSport that if Villa were to bring in any more defensive players, there could be question marks about his long-term future.

He said: “It’s going to be a big summer for Tyrone Mings. He’s had his ups and downs this season and just been left out of the England squad as well. It’s not great timing for Tyrone Mings, at the end of the season, to miss out on England.

“I still think he has got a part to play for Steven Gerrard going forward, but things can change if Villa were to bring in a couple of defensive signings. That would definitely raise question marks over his long-term future.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

Interestingly, Mings has been linked with a potential move away from Villa Park.

Mings has had a mixed bag this season in terms of stats in the Premier League for Villa. He had the most clearances on average per game (4.2) and the second-most accurate passes per game (36.7), but he also had the joint-most yellow cards in the entire league (11), as per SofaScore.

With the introduction of Carlos, Kortney Hause may be someone likely shown the door at Villa Park, but if Villa opt to sign any more defenders, then it could be that Ezri Konsa or Mings see their place in the starting XI taken.
