Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge believes Aston Villa’s work in the transfer window is not over and claims manager Steven Gerrard does not rate some of the players he has in the current squad.

Villa enjoyed a good season after Gerrard joined the side back in November 2021 but ultimately finished the season poor as they dropped down to 14th in the Premier League table. They have since started well in the transfer window, signing Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal, signing Boubacar Kamara on a free deal from Marseille and buying in 29-year-old Diego Carlos from Sevilla.

Despite the early business, it seems that the midlands team are not finished in the transfer market and could look to bring in more talent as it has been suggested by Bridge that Gerrard does not particularly rate several players in the squad and he could use his pull to replace them.

He told The Transfer Show, “I get the impression he doesn’t really rate many of his current crop. I think he does have a pull, Gerrard, and I like who they brought in already. I think they’ll be busy”.

Do you remember where Aston Villa made their signings from? Take our quiz to find out! First up, who did Frederic Guilbert turn out for immediately before moving to Villa Park?

While it is unsure who the particular players Gerrard doesn’t rate are, he has been on record this past season stating that not everyone in the squad has belief in what he is trying to do. He stated after the side’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal, “We set up to be aggressive but lacked belief in what we were doing. I thought certain individuals lacked belief. It’s hard to execute a game plan if not everyone believes in what you are doing”.

The side has already signed a new centre-back in Carlos, but with the numerous injuries sustained by defenders like Kortney Hause and Ezri Konsa, and the reports he may strip Tyrone Mings of the captaincy, we may see another face come through the door at the position.

They have also been linked with Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez and are rumoured to be entertaining ideas around selling Danny Ings, which suggests they are also in the market for another forward. While the future of the squad is uncertain for now, they have already done fantastic business this summer so there is no reason for fans to worry, right now.
