Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Aston Villa will be looking for a new left-back to provide competition for Lucas Digne.

Lucas Digne signed for Aston Villa in January from Everton for £27 million, and this was largely down to Steven Gerrard opting to send Matt Targett out on loan to fellow Premier League side Newcastle United, and he has gone on to sign a permanent deal at St James’s Park, after a successful loan move.

The French left-back featured 16 times in the second half of the Premier League campaign, but with Targett signing a permanent deal at Newcastle, he is the only recognisable left-sided defender in the Villa squad.

Despite only signing Digne in January, Romano has claimed on the ¡Qué Golazo! YouTube channel that Gerrard is looking to bring in another left-back in the summer to provide competition for the French defender.

“I am told that they are trying to find a new left-back to try and create some new competition to Lucas, so of course Lucas is a key player for Aston Villa but the next one could be a left-back,” Romano said.

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…
Digne impressed after he join Aston Villa in January in the second half of the season, he had the fourth-highest average player rating in the squad (6.94), so it is likely that Gerrard will not splash out on another left-back, and he will be expected to bring in someone who is happy to play second fiddle, or a young defender who can learn from Digne.
Gerrard had a disappointing end to the season after they failed to win any of their last four games which meant that they finished 14th in the Premier League, and Gerrard has already acted on this after signing Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos, and Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal, and he is not expected end the spree there.

What a pointless article. Everybody knows that Villa need a back up for Digne and it is generally accepted that it is likely to be Calvin Bassey because of his ability to provide centre back cover as well.

Basically this is old news that everybody knows. The next time you come up with an actual relevant article will be the first time.
