Journalist Ryan Taylor has claimed that Aston Villa will keep spending in the summer transfer window, so he can see Calvin Bassey signing at Villa Park.

Calvin Bassey has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, with the main club interested being Aston Villa, after Steven Gerrard has previously worked with the 22-year-old during their time at Rangers.

The young defender featured regularly this season for the Gers, he racked up 50 first-team appearances, with 14 of those coming in the Europa League when he helped his side reach the final of the competition, compared to last season when Bassey featured just 15 times in all competitions.

With Villa already confirming the signing of defender Diego Carlos from Sevilla, Taylor has claimed to GiveMeSport that he couldn’t see why both of them couldn’t happen.

“We’ll see how much Villa have to spend. The signs so far suggest they’re just going to keep spending, so I couldn’t see why both of them couldn’t happen,” Taylor said.

TIF Thoughts on Taylor’s comments…

Gerrard was brought into Aston Villa midway through the season, so he has not yet had a summer transfer window, however, he did make changes in January, when he shipped off Matt Targett on loan to Newcastle (the deal has now been made permanent), he brought in Lucas Digne and also Philippe Coutinho, initially, on loan.

Already this summer, Villa have confirmed the signings of Coutinho on a permanent deal, Carlos and Boubacar Kamara. This has proven that Gerrard is not holding back, and with the transfer window only officially opening yesterday, we think he is likely to make several more changes to the squad.

The 6ft Bassey has been a superb performer for Rangers this season, and he was given his plaudits for his performances in the Europa League, so Gerrard might be keen to bring him over to Villa Park to sure up his defence.

And it is apparent Gerrard is a big fan of his former defender who he previously hailed during his time at Ibrox: “We trust Calvin. I know he’s young and not mature yet in terms of being a professional,” he said.

“We need to polish him up, we know he’s a rough diamond. But his attributes mean he has a big part to play.”
