Dean Jones has dropped an early transfer blow to Arsenal fans after speaking on The Done Deal Show.

Arsenal will have had lofty ambitions for this upcoming transfer window when they were in pole position to finish inside the top four and be able to offer potential targets the glamour of Champions League football, however, after finishing fifth, Mikel Arteta and the board may well have had to rethink their plans.

The Gunners have been linked with players such as Gabriel Jesus, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Youri Tielemans and Aaron Hickey, but are still yet to make that first breakthrough in the market. While some fans may have been expecting a big overhaul this summer to try and kick on in the race for the top four, Jones isn’t so sure.

Jones believes that the Gunners have had to recently lower their expectations when it comes to the transfer market.

Will Arsenal finish in the top four next season?

He said: “One thing we do know is that Arsenal are having to rethink a little bit, their model for the summer. Three, four weeks ago, I was told, ‘expect six signings for Arsenal’, that’s being dumbed down a little bit now.

“We’re being told, ‘ok well, expect three or four significant signings, and then the other two might be guys that don’t feature quite so much yet’.”

Arteta will still be hoping that those three or four significant signings are big enough to help them overtake either Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the top four next season, otherwise, his own future at the Emirates Stadium could be less secure.

One position that obviously needs strengthening is centre-forward with no senior striker officially on the books for next season, and with Jesus seemingly their number-one target and being linked with a move to Spurs, Arsenal are going to have to get moving quickly if they wish to secure their top targets.
