As revealed by TalkSport reporter Alex Crook, Newcastle United have shown interest in signing Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yan Sommer.

The Magpies, in their first summer with their new riches, could splash out on the Swiss goalkeeper, who has consistently impressed in the Bundesliga, hence why he has made a total of 262 appearances, in which he has kept a total of 69 clean sheets.

Crook revealed Newcastle’s interest, saying: “The name I was given this morning was that of Yan Sommer, the long-standing Swiss number one, plays his club football at Borussia Monchengladbach, he’s only got a year left on that deal. He’s 33-years of age, so I think he sees it as one final payday. And actually 33-years old for a goalkeeper isn’t that old, he’s got good experience, and I think Newcastle are certainly paying a keen interest in him.”

Any deal would, of course, leave current Newcastle number one Martin Dúbravka‘s future open for debate, with Sommer potentially taking his place if he made the move to England.

The other competitor for that all important place, of course, is Karl Darlow. Although, his eight appearances in the entirety of last season suggest that he won’t making a serious claim for the number one spot anytime soon.

TIF Thoughts on Yan Sommer…

The signing of Sommer would only add to the smart ways in which Newcastle have already spent their newfound cash. The Magpies could have easily wasted the funds, but have so far opted for quality over quantity, with Kieran Tripper, Dan Burn, and Bruno Guimarães particular evidence of that.

Sommer, who was called ‘world class’ by the official Bundesliga website, is a player deserving of European football. Having missed out on that at Borussia Monchengladbach for the last two seasons, however, the goalkeeper may feel as though it’s time to move on.

Newcastle certainly have the ambitions of a European side, too, plus the added funds to make realise that ambition. Sommer, if given the chance, may jump at the opportunity.
