Kieran Trippier would be expected to be rewarded with the captain’s armband next season if Eddie Howe is to make the change.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter for the Toon, Keith Downie, who has been speaking to This Is Futbol amid the Premier League run-in.

Would Trippier make a good captain?

The current captain on Tyneside is the centre-back, Jamaal Lascelles, however, the 28-year-old’s spot in the Newcastle XI has not been a foregone conclusion in recent months.

With Howe in the dugout, Lascelles has only featured in five of the last 11 Premier League games and just three of those appearances have come from the starting XI (via Transfermarkt).

Despite having only been with the Toon for a number of months now, Downie does believe he would be the obvious choice should Howe look to mix things up:

I hadn’t considered it before. But now you mention it, he would have, you would think, characteristics to be a captain.

“And if it’s not Jamaal Lascelles next season, if Lascelles was to move on, or if he decided for a change, I would expect it to be Trippier.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comments…

We will be interested to see whether Howe does make the decision over the summer whether to change the captaincy up with Lascelles not really featuring regularly.

It would not surprise us if the 44-year-old did and we think it would make a lot of sense to give it to someone of Trippier’s experience.

The right-back has played at the highest level – where Newcastle are aiming towards – and he has already proven himself to be an influential figure at St. James’ Park since arriving in January.
