The Athletic’s Philip Buckingham has dropped an exciting claim following Sunderland’s promotion back into the Championship.

When Lee Johnson was sacked by the Sunderland board back in January, it appeared that Roy Keane was the man destined to replace him in the hotseat at the Stadium of Light, however, after the Irishman rejected them, they turned to the experienced Alex Neil.

Buckingham stated how Neil has only needed 98 days to mastermind Sunderland’s eventual escape out of League One after spending four seasons in England’s third tier, and fans will likely be very excited for what is to come this summer and their campaign in the Championship.

Buckingham took to Twitter after Sunderland’s victory at Wembley last weekend to say: “Alex Neil needed just 98 days to revive Sunderland and deliver the prize of promotion from League One. An outstanding job. And already thinking of bigger things in the Championship.”

This current PL centre-back almost signed for Sunderland back in 2015.

The Black Cats will know that stepping up into the Championship next season will be a huge test for them and their squad that has been built towards getting out of League One, but with a wealthy owner behind them and likely larger TV revenue, they could make some key additions.

Last time that Sunderland were in the Championship, they ended up being relegated for a second successive season, so supporters will be hoping it is more ‘exciting‘ this time around – and with Neil’s experience in the division, they could well have a successful campaign.
