Journalist Michael Bridge has claimed that if Allan McGregor leaves Rangers in the summer, it would be bad news for Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

McGregor returned to Rangers in 2018 from Hull City after coming through the youth academy with the Gers, and including both stints with the club, he has notched 447 appearances in all competitions, keeping 203 clean sheets.

The Scottish goalkeeper’s contract is set to expire, while there have been no talks of renewal for him at Ibrox. And with him being 40 years old, Van Bronckhorst will have a decision to make ahead of next season.

With McGregor’s contract expiring at the end of the month, Bridge claimed to GiveMeSport that he could still do a job. When asked how big a blow it would be to lose him, he responded: “Massive. I don’t think it’s been confirmed yet whether he is off. He could still probably do a job. What do Rangers do there?”

TIF Thoughts on Bridge’s comments…

McGregor has had another impressive season between the sticks for Rangers. In the Europa League, he had the sixth-highest average player rating for his side (6.99), conceded the second-lowest amount of goals per game in the Scottish Premiership (0.9) and kept the third-most clean sheets in the entire league (12), as per SofaScore.

Due to McGregor being a mainstay in the Rangers side over the past four seasons, it would be a huge miss if he was to leave the club in the summer, as Van Bronckhorst would have to search for a new No 1.

Although it would be a huge loss if McGregor was to leave, he is 40 years of age, and if Rangers want to move forward as a club, they might have to start thinking about the future, so investing in a young goalkeeper may be a wise option in any case.
