Rangers secured the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park after securing a 2-0 win to put the disappointment of the Europa League final behind them, although it wasn’t without controversy.
Peter Haring was booked just four minutes into the clash for a late challenge. He misses the ball and catches Calvin Bassey above the boot with his studs up. Connor Goldson reacts instantly because he knew the severity of the challenge.
Will rangers win the SPL next season?
Haring was only booked for the tackle with Rangers needing extra time to get the win. After no goals in the 90 minutes, a blitz from the Gers saw Ryan Jack and Scott Wright secure the cup in the first half of extra time.
TIF thoughts on the challenge…
Giovanni van Bronckhorst wasn’t happy about the penalty incident involving Joe Aribo and this won’t have pleased him either.
It certainly looked bad on the replays, much worse than the original camera angle. You can certainly see why Goldson reacted like he did, on another day, it could have easily been a straight red card. The referee was probably cautious about ruining a cup final so early on, which is wrong, a red card is a red card regardless of occasion and timing.
Indeed, one thing that will surely anger Rangers fans is the fact that Leon Balogun was sent off last month for a tackle very similar to the one yesterday, so consistency is the real issue.
When Scottish football has VAR from next season, you feel that the referee would have had no choice but to go and take a second look at the challenge as it certainly looked reckless. Thankfully for the Gers, the result wasn’t impacted and they ended their season on a high.
