Pundit Kris Commons has claimed that it would be the perfect time for Rangers to sell Calvin Bassey after his impressive displays this season.

There have been rumours of an exit from the Scottish Premiership for Rangers defender Bassey, with English Premier League outfit Aston Villa showing interest, but they may face competition from other English clubs who are also interested in him.

Bassey featured just 15 times for Rangers last season under current Villa boss Steven Gerrard, but he has broken through into the first team on a more regular basis this season after making 50 appearances in all competitions.

With Bassey breaking through to the first team this campaign, Commons claimed in the Scottish Daily Mail that it would be a good time to cash in on him.

He said (via Ibrox News): “It is inevitable that there is going to be an exodus of senior players from Ibrox this summer, with Allan McGregor and Connor Goldson chief among them. Steven Davis also looks likely to depart. Clubs will undoubtedly be interested in the likes of Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos.

“All three of them could easily go for the right price, especially since they are now entering the final year of their contracts. The club shouldn’t have allowed them to run down their deals.

“It could also be the perfect moment to cash in on the outstanding Calvin Bassey, who was superb in both the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals.

“Bassey was moved from left-back to centre-back more through necessity earlier in the season, but he has been a revelation. Right now, he’s Rangers’ top asset.”

TIF Thoughts on Commons’ comments…

Bassey has thrived this season under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. He was trusted by the Dutch manager to play in big games during the impressive Europa League run, with the defender featuring 14 times in the competition.

With the impressive displays of Bassey this season, it will interesting to see where he ends up next campaign, and while Commons has claimed that it would be a good time for Rangers to cash in, Van Bronckhorst may opt to keep him at the club for at least another season due to his importance to the side this term.
