Rangers could pull off an astute piece of business in the summer if they are to secure the services of Eric Martel.

This is according to football journalist Pete O’Rourke, who has been speaking to This Is Futbol amid the reports linking the youngster to the Gers.

Would Martel be a good addition in the summer?

It is believed the 19-year-old has been told he can leave RB Leipzig in the summer with the Ibrox side ‘aware‘ of the midfielder, who is also receiving interest from other German sides.

The youngster has currently been spending the season out on loan with Austria Vienna, where he has made 28 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga – starting all 28 (via Transfermarkt).

With reports suggesting Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men could be in the market for Martel, O’Rourke feels there could be a bargain to be had:

“It’s an interesting transfer target that Rangers have got here in Martel, and somebody who you would think could be a bargain as well at a cheap price. It could be an astute piece of business by Rangers if they do pursue their interest in Martel,” said O’Rourke.

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

Martel has clearly impressed in Austria given he has started all 28 of his appearances in the Bundesliga this season – with a yellow card suspension keeping him sidelined for the only other game of the campaign to date.

And it is apparent he has done enough to attract the attention of others, with Cologne, Union Berlin and Freiburg all believed to be interested in picking him up in the summer.

With just one year remaining on his Leipzig deal, we would be interested to see how cheap he would be available for.

And as O’Rourke notes, it would seem like a potential coup if Rangers could beat the Bundesliga sides to the signature of the German U21 midfielder.
