Journalist Derek Clark has praised Rangers transfer target Oladapo Afolayan as a ‘player you pay money to go see’ amid rumours of his departure from Bolton Wanderers in the summer.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will start their rebuild after they finished second in the Scottish Premiership table, behind their rivals but find themselves battling it out for European silverware against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final.

The domestic season has finished but Rangers are already looking at possible targets in this summer transfer window to continue to build around their new manager and put the pressure back on Celtic against next season.

How well do you remember where Rangers' signings came in from down the years? Take our quiz to find out! First up, Carlos Pena was the Gers' most expensive arrival during the summer of 2017, but where did he join from?

The latest reported target (via The Bolton News) has come in the form of Bolton Wanderers winger Oladapo Afolayan who has enjoyed a great year in League One, finishing ninth and going unbeaten in their last eight games of the season.

As a result of this good form, Afolayan has garnered interest from the Scottish club and according to Clark, he is ‘not surprised’ to see him linked for various reasons he stated on Twitter.

He wrote, “Incredible to think Dapo Afolayan could be playing Champions League football next season. Not surprised to see him linked with Rangers, he’s a player you pay money to go and watch, his mentality is top-notch”.

TIF Thoughts on Afolayan to Rangers…

The 24-year-old has played very well in his first season as a permanent member of the Trotters, racking up an impressive 12 goals and four assists in League One, finishing as their top goalscorer this season and would have finished third in the Rangers squad, only behind James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos, and Kemar Roofe.

His underlying numbers are also just as impressive, averaging 3.1 shots, 1.5 key passes, 1.4 dribbles, 2.6 times fouled, and 1.6 long balls per game as well as 75.4% passing accuracy on 25.3 attempts per game (via WhoScored).

Rangers need to close the gap on Celtic fast and with their ageing squad, an average of 30.4 years old this season, needs to be rebuilt. Acquiring a player like Afolayan will do wonders to the age of the squad as well as inject more goals into the side.
