Celtic fans will surely love what Sky Sports broadcaster Kweku Afari has said about the team – stating the Hoops have had a better season than their Glasgow rivals, despite them reaching a European final.

Celtic managed to clinch their 52nd Scottish Premier League title after an impressive season which saw them lose only three games all season as they took back the bragging rights after their nine-year run of titles was ended during the 2020/21 season.

However, despite losing out on the SPFL title, Rangers had an incredible season in Europe, taking themselves to the Europa League final where they narrowly lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties

Interesting first question, how many Celtic fans were inside Ibrox?

Rangers fans will be elated by the European run regardless of the fact they failed to take the trophy home, however, what Celtic fans can take solace in is that they won the league title when their bitter rivals failed to win any trophies thus far – with the weekend’s Scottish Cup final their only remaining shot of silverware.

Sky Sports man Afari echoed this sentiment during a recent interview, stating: “Despite the fact that Rangers have gone on an incredible European tour, we know that football is about winning trophies, and Celtic will look at the fact they have regained the Scottish title after losing out on it last season as a bigger achievement than Rangers reaching the final of a European competition, I think.”

TIF Thoughts on who’s had the better season…

Undoubtedly, both teams had incredible seasons as Celtic reclaimed the Scottish Premier League under incoming boss Ange Postecoglou and Rangers reached their first European final since the 2007/08 season when they lost the UEFA Cup final to Zenit.

However, Afari is right – the point of football and the measuring stick we use to determine who is great is the number of trophies they have won, and in this case, Celtic will beat Rangers in this area this season.

It is even more impressive when you look at how they did so, amid a rebuild under a new manager which saw 17 new players come through the door, with most of them making an impact in the first team.

With the success of both teams this season, it will be great to see what they can do in the 2022/23 season, and while the neutrals will be hoping for another titanic tussle, Celtic certainly have the trophy and the bragging rights for now.
