Journalist Josh Holland has dubbed Chiquinho to follow in the footsteps of Diogo Jota and Daniel Podence in terms of breaking into the Portuguese national team.

Chiquinho was brought into Wolves in January from Estoril Praia for £3.15 million, and he has made six appearances in the Premier League since. The Portuguese winger made 15 appearances in Liga Portugal this season and managed to score three goals and register three assists, before making the switch to England.

Adama Traore was sent out on loan to Barcelona in January, and the deal could be made permanent in the summer if the Spanish club want to sign him. So, Chiquinho was brought in as a replacement for the pacey winger.

With Chiquinho being just 22-years-old, Holland has highlighted to GiveMeSport the aspirations that the youngster may have in terms of international football.

“He’s aspiring and going to want to show his worth to then follow in the footsteps of Diogo Jota and Daniel Podence by getting into that Portugal team.

“I don’t blame Tim (Spiers) for being an admirer of him. I think when he came on against Arsenal when they lost 1-0, he was just running at Arsenal. It’s just something that Wolves miss when Traore is not there. It’s whether he’s got that final product that Traore obviously struggled with,” Holland said.

TIF Thoughts on Holland’s comments…

Chiquinho has featured sparingly for Wolves since he joined in January, he has made six appearances in the Premier League, but is yet to make a start. In Wolves’ last game, the Portuguese winger came off the bench and was impressive after he contributed with two assists, which meant that he received a player rating of 8.2, the highest in the Wolves side.

The impressive display from the bench for Chiquinho may be enough to earn him a start in their next game against Manchester City. With not a lot to play for in the remaining games of the season for Wolves, this could be a good opportunity to see what the 22-year-old can do from the start.
