West Ham United are expected to keep Alphonse Areola at the London Stadium, with a clause in his contract expected to be triggered.

This is according to reliable transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking on the latest episode of his Here We Go podcast.

The French goalkeeper has spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan with the Hammers and has been able to register 18 appearances across all competitions.

And according to The Athletic, West Ham have an option to re-sign the goalkeeper on loan for another season – but also have an £11m clause to permanently sign him.

And it appears Moyes is set to reward Areola for an impressive campaign at the London Stadium, with Romano claiming an announcement should be made soon:

“Alphonse Areola will stay and continue at West Ham because the intention is to continue with him, is to trigger the clause and so in the coming days, everything will be sorted out.”

Should WHU sign Areola on loan or permanently?

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

We think this will please a lot of Hammers fans after the 29-year-old has put in some impressive displays in the Europa League run for David Moyes’ side.

In his 11 appearances in the Europa League, the Frenchman was able to keep five clean sheets with just eight goals conceded (via Transfermarkt).

West Ham’s current No 1, Lukasz Fabianski, is now 37 years old, and with his future still not confirmed with the Hammers, we will be interested to see what role Areola may have in the future under Moyes.
