Sergio Reguilon has essentially been at Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the last two years having joined from Real Madrid in 2020.
This has been revealed by the reliable Alasdair Gold, who was speaking about the future of the Spanish left-back in his latest YouTube video.
Should Spurs sell Reguilon this summer?
Yes
No
The 25-year-old made the move to north London back in the summer of 2020 in a deal which was reported to be worth up to £32m.
It was believed Real Madrid held the option to buy Reguilon back from Spurs at what would’ve been a profit for the north London side.
However, Gold now believes Spurs now have to stump up the money for the Spaniard having had two years without paying a penny for the 25-year-old, who was hailed as ‘quality’ by Noel Whelan for his performance against Leeds earlier this season.
He said: “I’ve known about this one, but I’ve been holding off on reporting it until I could find out the whole thing.
“I kept hearing that essentially, Reguilon’s deal was almost – and this is why I’ve been kind of reluctant to report on it – but almost a two-year loan deal with an obligation to buy. It’s not exactly that, from what I can tell, it’s not, but it’s as close to a loan as you can get.
“They signed him, and they kind of almost got him for two years for nothing because then they had to pay the fee in the second summer, so summer of 2022. They signed him in the summer of 2020.
“So it’s interesting with Reguilon because it was roughly about £28m, the fee, I think if I remember correctly.
“With Reguilon, I think the option may be that they look to sell him, I think they will.”
TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…
This does seem like a slightly odd deal, but perhaps it coincided with the buy-back clause it is believed Madrid had in Reguilon’s move to the north London side.
However, Gold believes this will not play too much to the disadvantage of Spurs this summer, with the left-back expected to be moved on in the market.
And it is already reported Barcelona are showing an interest in the Spurs ace, while Tottenham are also believed to be targeting his potential replacement already.

As per usual Gold hasn’t got a clue. Utterly hilarious. Why does he bother. ‘Well it’s kinda sorta like a loan but not a loan with a payment that might or might not be paid on a player that might be signed or possibly not signed’
