Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could have missed their chance at signing Sam Johnstone due to not offering him regular game time.

There were reports earlier this month that Spurs were leading the race to sign Sam Johnstone in the summer, with his contract expiring with current club West Bromwich Albion in June.

Despite the links earlier this month of Spurs being interested in signing Johnstone, Jones claimed to GiveMeSport that he has been put off a transfer due to the north London club not being able to offer him regular football.

He said: “Basically what happened was, Sam Johnstone was very far down the line in terms of joining, and, from what I understand, he had certain hopes about a guarantee of game time, and Tottenham couldn’t give him that.

“And he’s basically had reservations, and now that [Fraser] Forster’s come onto their radar as a new option, it looks like they’re going to go ahead with that one instead of Sam Johnstone.”

Do you think Johnstone could challenge Lloris at Spurs?

Yes

No

No

Johnstone stuck around in the Championship with West Brom with the likely intentions of regaining Premier League status with them, but this was not to be as the Baggies ended up finishing 10th in the table.

With Johnstone’s contract expiring at the end of the season, he may be keen to leave the club for a top-flight side, but with Spurs having Hugo Lloris in the sticks at the moment, it would have been difficult to see him getting regular football.

The English ‘keeper is 29 years old, so still has plenty of time left in his career and an opportunity to get back into the England squad, so it may have been a bad move for him to sign for Spurs if he was going to be nothing more than a backup.
