Journalist Ryan Taylor has claimed that Sam Johnstone is looking like he is set to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
Johnstone has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Spurs thought to be interested in bringing him to the club, but Antonio Conte may face some competition in the race to sign him, as former club Manchester United are also tracking his progress and interested in bringing him back to Old Trafford.
The English ‘keeper signed for West Bromwich Albion in 2018 and has gone on to make 167 appearances in all competitions since, whilst keeping an impressive 45 clean sheets.
With Johnstone’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, Daily Express reporter Taylor claimed to GiveMeSport that he is ‘pretty much’ set to sign for Spurs.
He said: “I know Sam Johnstone is pretty much looking set to sign for Spurs. Nothing is done yet, but he will come in to replace Gollini, who’s going back to Atalanta. He’s not made enough appearances to trigger the obligation to buy.”

TIF Thoughts on Taylor’s comments…
Johnstone, who was described as ‘outstanding’ by Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle, has been impressive for West Brom this season. In the Championship, he has the third-lowest amount of goals conceded on average per game (0.9) and the fourth-most clean sheets (15), while only three sides conceded fewer than West Brom’s 45 all season, as per SofaScore.
Hugo Lloris is currently the No 1 goalkeeper at Spurs and signed a new contract earlier this year, but he is 35 years old, so Conte may be looking to bring in Johnstone to replace the Frenchman in the long term or act as a backup until it is time for Lloris to move on.
With Spurs qualifying for the Champions League ahead of next season, Conte may be looking to strengthen the depth of the squad, so bringing in Johnstone, who has experience playing in the Premier League and has such impressive stats this season, could be a great signing.
