Journalist Tom Barclay from The Sun has recently revealed Southampton are willing to listen to offers on academy graduate Theo Walcott in this summer’s transfer window after failing to secure consistent game-time.

Southampton endured a turbulent season under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, ultimately finishing 15th in the Premier League table after reaching as high as 10th before slipping down the table at the back end of the season. Both fans and the club will be disappointed in their season after signing a number of impressive youngsters including Tino Livramento, Armando Broja, Romain Perraud, and Adam Armstrong.

Despite the good signings they once again had to rely on the undeniable ability of James Ward-Prowse who racked up an impressive 11 goals and eight assists this season while averaging an incredible 60% shot accuracy, as well as new signing Broja who showed his potential with nine goals.

However, one attacker who didn’t make an impact this season was 33-year-old winger Theo Walcott, who is valued at £2.7 million (as per Transfermarkt), which has led to speculation from Barclay that the Saints will look to accept offers on the wingers this summer.

He told GiveMeSport, “I don’t know about specific interest in him, but they’re open to offers. I think he’s got one year left on his contract and it’s clear that he hasn’t had much game-time.

“He doesn’t seem the same player that he was, he’s 33, and a lot of his game was pace, not just pace, but it was a big factor as we all remember from those years at Arsenal.”

TIF thoughts on Barclay’s comments…

It makes sense that Hasenhuttl and Southampton are looking to move on from Walcott this summer, he has failed to have a positive impact on the side since his loan season back in the 20/21 season where he bagged three goals and three assists.

This season he only managed 455 minutes in all competitions this season with only five of those coming as starts as he failed to score or assist at all for the Saints. His underlying numbers also do not put the winger in a great light, as according to Whoscored he only managed 0.6 shots, 0.1 key passes, 0.2 dribbles, and 0.2 long balls.

The Saints may struggle to get a good offer for the £2.7 million-rated Walcott as he has shown he is not the player he once was during his time at Arsenal, maybe it is time for him to move into the Championship or even overseas in order to extend his career.
