Journalist Michael Bridge spoke exclusively with This Is Futbol and claimed that Steven Bergwijn’s time at Spurs may be up after lack of involvement.
Bergwijn has been heavily out of favour this season for Spurs, as he has featured 23 times in the Premier League for the north London club, but just four of those have been from the start and he averages just 23 minutes per game. He has scored three times in the league whilst contributing with one assist.
There have been reports that Bergwijn is going to leave Spurs in the summer transfer window, with a return to the Eredivisie potentially on the cards as Ajax are interested in signing him.
With Bergwijn featuring sparingly for Spurs this season, Bridge told us that this could be an indication of an exit from the club in the summer.

“Despite those heroics at Leicester, he’s still not being seen or trusted to start. And I would have thought maybe sort of deserved maybe to be nudged in front of Lucas Moura now. But even now I feel like Conte tends to opt for Moura over Bergwijn. So I think the writing is on the wall really,” Bridge said.

Antonio Conte hasn’t been the biggest fan of Bergwijn this season, despite his January heroics when he came on in the 79th minute to score a brace against Leicester City, which was enough to secure an important three points for his side. Indeed, as Bridge mentions, performances like this have not been enough to warrant any more game time this season, so you would have to say that he just isn’t wanted.
He has even been impressive on the international stage this season, which saw him receive praise from a couple of his Netherlands teammates, with one of them calling him a ‘top player’.
The Dutch winger is 24-years-old, so he might just need a return to his home country, which was something that nearly happened in January. Especially with the introduction of Dejan Kulusevski, Bergwijn has seen his game time limited even further with Lucas Moura also ahead of him in the pecking order.
